Canonical urls are content that has multiple urls pointing to it, but your website specifies which is the preferred url to it.

An example is when you have a url with a www. preceding the domain name and a url without the www. and you set a canonical link element to specify which you want as the default one.

A canonical URL is an indication to search engines that this URL is the authentic version of a web page. What this means is that sometimes there are two or more web pages on your site having the same exact content, either by accident or by system error. Without canonical URL, search engines like Google will crawl and index all of these duplicate URLs and this is really bad for SEO, because duplicate contents look bad in both users and search engines' eyes.
The canonical tag is placed inside the <head> tag of a web page:
<head>
...
<link rel="canonical" href="https://www.example.com/">
...
</head>

Canonical URLs relate to the concept of selecting the best URL for the web pages that the visitors want to see. Also, known as canonical tags, these URLs help in content syndication when multiple versions of a same page become available over the Internet. Thus, it is used to resolve issues related to content duplication.

For example, most people would consider these the same urls:
www.example.com
example.com/
www.example.com/index.html
example.com/home.asp

But technically all of these urls are different.
