What is the ideal density? I hear so much conflicting information about this, but overall I hear about 2% is correct

You won't find a 100% correct answer.
Many people even believe some SEO factors may also depend on the search competition in the niche. )

1) Write good content first
2) Tweak keywords afterwards. (At least make sure titles and headers are spot on.)
