SEM (search engine marketing) is promoting your business and improving visibility via SEO and PPC i.e. SEM makes use of paid as well as organic techniques to convert sales.
It makes use of
-SEO
-Ad words
-Pay per click advertising
-Contextual advertising
-Affiliate marketing

PPC is paid yet effective marketing strategy in which advertisers get paid only when their ads get clickedIt gives you quick results but it has no affect on organic search rankings.
Infact there is as such no confirmed case where PPC listings have directly affected your organic listings on any engine. PPC just helps you target specific audience.
PPC is paid and has no relation to organic rankings. Best benefit of PPC would be improved ROI.
The largest PPC providers currently are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft Ad Center.
So, in short SEM = SEO + PPC

PPC is one of the best and current demanding online adverting strategy and is a part of SEM. SEM is very broad term and includes so many things. PPC categorize as per your business goal. If you want only clicks then CPC is the best for you, if you want your brand awareness then CPM is the best and if you want a specific action from your customers then CPA is the best.

During the four years I worked in this field was a pity that it does not seem to go away. For some reason, people still visit the area - Search Engine Marketing and Search Marketing - and the practice of our industry - Paid Search - the same acronym - SEM. In this way, these individuals (who shall remain nameless), Allow marketing research to define the practice, which covers almost the entire spectrum of what we do.

PPC:-  PPC is also called CPC. It is a Pay Per Click or Cost Per Click. It is an advertising technique to increase traffic on our site. In PPC concept site owner can directly contacts with their customer because here only click those persons who are interested in advertised product. And it provide some benefits to site holder like, they are only pay for number of time visitor can click on their advertise. It is good concept but it is not necessary to you can also get traffic.

SEM:- Search Engine Marketing. Search Engine Marketing technique is also used to increase traffic on our site from the other sources not from SEO techniques. It will display our site link on different sites and advertised it but site holder can pay for it.

In my opinion ppc is a part of SEM. if you expect direct action from your advertising such as buy product, sign up etc then ppc is good. If you want to branding of then cpm is better. in CPM stands for cost per thousand impressions and it don't cost for the clicks on your advertise. ppc stands for pay per click. it cost you for per click and doesn't matter how much page impressions you get.

According to me  PPC means Pay per click, PPI means Pay per impression, SEO means Search Engine optimization.
