What are the common SEO mistakes?

At its core, search engine optimization is a collection of marketing and technical best practices that any self-respecting website owner should be doing anyway, even if search engines didn't exist.

When we provide SEO Audit and Roadmap services for our enterprise-level clients, we usually break things down into three major categories: Content, Site Architecture, and Inbound Links. This is based on the idea that the purpose of having a website in the first place is to present Content for your target audience on a properly built website that naturally attracts links from other relevant websites. Google and the other search engines know that websites have this purpose and reward websites who do it properly.

In my experience, the biggest SEO mistake I%u2019ve seen is the use of keywords and/or anchor links that are too generic.

It%u2019s intended to cast as wide a net as possible, but just because you%u2019re generating a huge volume of traffic doesn%u2019t mean that you%u2019re generating quality traffic that will be converted somewhere down the line.

In fact, narrowing your keywords a little may mean that fewer people land on your page, but there will be more of the people who might actually buy your product/service. It%u2019s the difference between %u201CPlumber%u201D and %u201CPlumber Bronx NY.%u201D

This is actually tied into content %u2014 usually, problems with keywords come from problems with the overall focus and quality of your content. In writing, when you have a bad essay, you%u2019ll probably also have a bad title.

The solution is to plan your SEO strategy in alignment with your content marketing strategy. Don%u2019t treat SEO like a battle plan for manipulating Google algorithms all the way to the top of the search page. Treat it as a distribution aspect of your marketing plan.

That means you must invest in tools for analytics. Without tracking and measuring every single user activity on your website, you can%u2019t know how people are getting there, what they%u2019re interested in, and what doesn%u2019t appeal to your target market.

There can be several SEO mistakes one person can do, but most common that I've experienced over the years or I did during my journey were:

1. Not choosing a good niche and going for too competitive niche.
2. Lacking in Keyword Research and Content Planning.
3. Bad UI/UX of the site.
4. Mistakes in On-Page SEO like improper internal and external links, meta title and meta description.
5. Loopholes in Technical SEO.
6. Putting Off-Page and link building behind or opting for a wrong strategy.

These were issues I experienced over the years. If you know any you can also add.
