The domain name extension is the letters to the right of your Second-Level Domain. An easy example of this is .COM or .ORG. When someone is referring to a TLD they are referring to the extension only.

Domain extension refers to the notation found at the end of web addresses. The extension is used to specify a country code or any web category. For example, .edu is a domain extension to specify educational institution as the web category.

A top-level domain (TLD), also referred to as a domain extension, is the suffix that follows the domain name in a web address; the most widely-used is ".com". TLDs are managed by the Domain Name System of the Internet, which controls how domain names are translated into Internet Protocol, or IP, addresses.

Domain extensions were originally created to divide websites into categories based on organization type. The thinking was that all websites can be broken down first by the entity (the "top-level" category), then by organization name (the "second-level" category), then by website section using subdomains.
