Google uses links for things like PageRank and anchor text. So when they find links, they can give you a rankings boost. When a page 404s when those links break, when they go to a page that doesn't work, those link signals don't have a chance to pass anymore, and that can hurt your SEO.

When visitors follow links to or from your site they are expecting certain content to be available to them once they get to that page. Broken links are not only bad for user experience but can also be harmful to your site's loving relationship with Google, i.e. your SEO. Avoid linking out to broken content, and also avoid having pages on your site that are broken.

Broken links occur when a web page contains a link to another site, but the link no longer exists. These types of links are often referred to as dead links. When a website owner adds a link to their site, they should make sure that the link works before adding it to their site. If a link does not work, then search engines may view it as a broken link. A broken link could cause a penalty if enough time passes without fixing the issue.
