Link decay is a term dedicated to the phenomenon of a link’s fading interest or disappearing of links with time.
With time, a link will start experiencing lesser clicks as users start losing interest in the topic.
As new trends start pouring in, webpages start disappearing from the web as a result of link decay.

"Web decay" in information retrieval science refers to the loss of pages from the Internet. Back in 2006 Slawski blogged about a patent that looked at link decay, where web pages were found to disappear from the web at a rate of 0.5% per week.
World wide web(www) size calculates total pages on the Internet at 19.64 Billion, while SEOmoz say the average page has 13.32 external links on it.  By my calculations that's 1.3 Billion links being wiped out each week!

Link decay means that search engine remove content after short time when content is un- necessary. In some of the blogs sites, where the post goes to archive they remove the content or change the URL of the post to fit in archive. This can be considered as link decay.

If there is any adding in site and after some time it will remove it or disappear from the site so it called link decay. We can also say that the link breakage is called as link decay.

Link decay means Broken links for example => a site owner placed a link and then after some days he removed that links so in between this time if the search engine crawled the page then it starts showing results for that link but the link is not available because it's broken by the site admin, this situation is called as Link decay.
