I tend to think it's best to do yourself if you are looking for truly natural links.
Most services you can purchase are rarely fully natural (often some automated link posting, link exchange, blog comment, forum profiles etc.)
In general free/freeium services get free natural links *much* easier than e.g. commercial products.

I want to add only one point in this answer.Natural links are always has to be from one way linking.It not has to be from reciprocal.This is also main characteristic of natural link.

Also we do all link building to get higher rank in Google and other search engines. And if we get penalized in them only then what's the use of this much work. I would prefer ethical SEO for few months then unethical ways to get ranking in a month or two.
