I am doing SEO from last 4 years and still i am doing directory submission for every project.

I think directory submission is good source for collecting backlinks,

From that you can also generate traffic for your site. but make sure that confirmation link must be check by you, after your site will approved by directory owner and visible, also main thing to choose appropriate category for your site. I think, would suggest Pinging and doing Article submission with your original and unique content.

Yes very effective way to get backlinks specially in high PR directories.

Now directory submission is poison for site. Site will be spam if you do too much directory submission.

Before directory submission you have to check for do follow,high page rank and relevance category then you can benefits otherwise it will work as spam for you....
