Panda was a series of algorithm changes targeted at identifying and penalizing low quality content and rewarding high quality content. "Low quality" content is basically content that lacks depth whereas high quality content is both in-depth and authoritative.

Penguin was a series of algorithm changes targeted at identifying and penalizing black hat SEO techniques. Certain forms of link-buying, and linking schemes (both attempts at manipulating pagerank) were especially targeted.

Google launched the Penguin Update in April 2012 to better catch sites deemed to be spamming its search results, in particular those doing so by buying links or obtaining them through link networks designed primarily to boost Google rankings.

Google Panda is a change to Google's search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February 2011. The change aimed to lower the rank of "low-quality sites" or "thin sites", and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results.

Always believe on content and excellent and genuine link building. While saying genuine link building, I mean building links from reputed and high page rank websites and which are relevant to your business.  After the recent penguin update in Google algorithm it is the original content plays an important role in ranking a website in search engines.
