I have done SEO / SEM for 5 years and started this site as a way to organise my bookmarks and the information I had collected over the years. If you frequent other prominent SEM resources you'll find that this tutorial, like most search engine promotion sites, tends to go over the same ground.

SEO includes your organic search engine ranking not with the traffic. Includes on page optimization, off page optimization, competitor analysis....... etc

SEM is only related to traffic either paid or free like Yahoo, Google and MSN. It is a form of paid advertising which can guarantee you prominent ranking on the search engine results.

I am going to start with SEO, as it is a part of SEM. SEO is the act of optimising the HTML and other content of your website for relevant, targeted key phrases in order to attain higher natural listings than competing websites. SEO provides a cheaper long term solution for increased qualified traffic and generates customer inquiries that ultimately convert to sales. Now SEM is broader than SEO. It includes SEO and other areas to improve a sites visibility in search engine results pages, like paid listings and paid inclusions. You can think of SEM as more expensive and quite possibly more targeted, while SEO is free (not counting your time of course) and its purpose is to obtain better free search listings. Personally, I would start with SEO and then move onto SEM.

SEO is part of SEO and SEM stands for paid traffic while SEO would for free/organic traffic.

SEM will give you instant result while SEO would take some time to produce desired results.

Everyone's pretty much covered the jest of it here. SEO has the big benefit of being free, which attracts me to it. I recommend working on SEO to start with and then adding SEM over time as things progress.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is an umbrella term that describes the different methods you can use to make your Web site more visible on search engines so that you can drive more traffic to your site. SEO, therefore, would be a subset of SEM. Search engine marketing (SEM) is the overall process of combining the two
processes of search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click advertising (PPC). SEM includes things such as search engine optimization, paid listings and other search-engine related services and functions that will increase exposure and traffic to your Web site.

The main difference is that SEO just covers the natural methods of making a website search engine friendly while SEM covers a broad spectrum of online website marketing. Some websites only use SEO to gain an advantage in the search engines, while other websites take advantage of the other online marketing resources which are available to them.
