Page Rank is only one factor and while it is important to Google it does not work the way you are thinking.

Page Rank is a score that is increased and or decreased according to the number of links pointing at our site. Google scores a link on many different factors as to the amount of PR they will give the site they are linking to.

If a site has high page rank then it is considered more trustworthy in sight of Google or search engine and index it easily...

Mostly targets of seo is improving page rank of keywords of websites. So its so important for seo point of view.

SERP is important but equally page rank is also important, I personally think page rank partially influences SERP.
