It can be both, but it's all about quality of your content and authority sites that are linking to you.

If the keyword has low to medium competition, probably the quickest way to rank your site is a long tail keyword in url. But you should always verify your competition before buyng such a domain.

long tail keywords are more beneficial but it should be choose wisely. You can include your shorttail keyword in your long term keyword. Its more chances to get traffic from long tail keyword. Because your site can rank on such keywords also which u never imagine.

If you rank number 30,714 for the term "mp3," you won't get any traffic from that at all. Finding good long tail keywords is very important, because you need those long tail phrases to bring in traffic.

The difference between long tail keyword phrases and short tail keyword phrases can make or break your online business.  This applies especially to competitive markets – if you don't properly select your keyword phrases

Long tail keywords bring in less traffic, but convert more sales

(the words you want to rank well for) for your business, you will experience little traffic and low sales – that I can guarantee you

Long tail keywords can be a combination of two shorter keywords, so while you are building links for the long-tail phrase you are also building them for the shorter keywords.

As the name suggests, short tail keywords are short, usually 1 or 2 words while the long tail keywords consists of a set of 3 or more words. Generally, people prefer using the long tail keywords as they are more competitive and can be synchronized properly within the content. Which type of keywords should be used? This depends on the market in which you are operating and the competitiveness of your keywords. The most important factor is that the keywords should look natural when they are inserted in the content. It is important to take the reader's perspective into consideration before adding a lot of keywords for the search engines. The search engines will favor you only if the content is useful and valuable to the people.
