Hi Friends,
You can give Do-follow back links to only few sites that meet this criteria:

1.) More DA and PA than yours

2.) Sites that are 5 or more years older and having first page ranking

3.) Having Page Rank higher than yours

Rest give no-follow links because it will pass link juice between the sites.

No Follow links cannot hurt your site. The fact that he used the word "typically" is an indication that No Follow links can hurt your website in exceptional cases

First, you need to understand what nofollow actually means.

People think nofollow means Google (or any other search engine) won't follow the link. Truth is, the website only says "I don't suggest following this link. Rest I leave on your concent."

This means, search engines may or may not follow the link. But they MAY follow, and that's a benefit.

Second, you still get huge traffic from nofollow links. Consider Quora. The links are nofollow but gives you plenty of traffic. More traffic, more authority, more shares/back links, higher ranking.

But, you need to be careful while making nofollow links. Don't work hard to get a nofollow link from a low quality website.

No follow is a link attribute that instructs spiders not to crawl the particular backlink on the webpage. Hence these links are never indexed in search engines. They are only used to build traffic from various external webpages.

For many SEO experts, a nofollow link from a reputable site is more valuable than a dofollow link from a low Domain Authority site.

Nofollow links are links with a rel="nofollow" HTML tag applied to them. The nofollow tag tells search engines to ignore that link. Because nofollow links do not pass PageRank they likely don't impact search engine rankings.
