I think what you want to know is Off-page method so I won't talk about On-page methods.
Currently I think the best methods to get rank is via Guest Posting/Blogging. It seems there are more and more people using this method and it's quite effective, though it requires combination with other methods and proper plan to bring out the best result.
Other method can be using social sites like fb or twitter, however these sites are mostly for traffic, backlinks from fb and twitter seem not to be too effective.
