The keyword SEO difficulty or keyword competition is a major keyword metric when doing a keyword research. The higher the value, the harder is to compete with others on the market using that keyword. It's a critical metric alongside with exact monthly search volumes and SERP analysis.

Keyword difficulty (KD) - is a metric which can help you to determine your chances to rank for a certain keyword in the top of search.

Keyword difficulty identifies how difficult it would be to rank well for a particular keyword. and the value is higher for more popular words because it will be more difficult to compete with 1,000s of other sites for a popular word than with 10s of others for the less popular ones.

A higher keyword difficulty score means it will be more difficult to compete with the already-ranking results, and a lower difficulty score means it's likely to be easier. But there are many variables.
Keyword Difficulty is based on the PA and DA scores of the results that rank in Google's top 10 for a given keyword, as well as several other factors (like how many homepages vs. internal pages appear, use of query terms in the results, and more).
