You can write up to 300 characters in meta description
Google generally truncates snippets ~300 characters.

As per my openion ,From may 2018 the meta decription length is 130-155 char
I checked something 2 months ago meta descriptions length increase but recently google change. I don't know Why??
Meta descriptions can be any length, but Google generally truncates snippets ~300 characters (this limit increased in December 2017). It's best to keep meta descriptions long enough that they're sufficiently descriptive, so we recommend descriptions between 50–300 characters.
Research from Yoast and Moz shows that Google snippets are now exceeding 300 characters. The 6.0 release of the Yoast SEO Word Press plugin updates their recommendation to 320 characters. Moz recommends 300 characters.
