Title: What is Link Sculpting?
Post by: seoservicesezone on January 24, 2012, 02:30:31 AM
By using the nofollow attribute strategically webmasters were able to channel the flow of PR within their websites, thus increasing the search rankings of desired pages. This practice is no longer effective as Google recently change how it handles the nofollow attribute.

Link sculpting means using the nofollow tag on internal links to direct the flow of PageRank through your site. The idea is that by using nofollow on a link, the PageRank attributed to that link is instead redistributed to other links on that page.

Hi,
Link sculpting is all about directing the power of your pages within your site. When you obtain a link from another site, you do so in the hope that some of that page's ranking will rub off on you. When you link between your pages, you're essentially doing the same thing. Some links within your site, however, don't have this intention; they're utilitarian links, the ones you need to allow site users to get around. Other types of links that you send out to other sites are also thought to draw on your Page Rank, otherwise referred to as PR.

As of me Link sculpting is (or used to be) a way to control the flow of pr of a website. If you had 2 links on a site, link 'a' and 'b', but you wanted all the linkjuice to flow out of link 'a', you would tag link b 'n0f0ll0w', like plugging a hole in a swimming pool w/ 2 holes - it would flow stronger through the other hole. Now, even if you tag link b 'n0f0ll0w', it will still only flow out of link 'a' at 50% regardless.

The A1 Website Analyzer tool can be used to sculpt internal link juice in a website (http://www.microsystools.com/products/website-analyzer/help/website-analyzer-link-juice/). It can do this because it calculates importances for all URLs in a website based on internal linking.

Link sculpting means that you are trying to get all the power of your web pages to your website. It uses the no follow tag in the internal links to increase the PR through your website. The idea behind it is that the PR attribute to that link instead of redistributed links to other links to that page.

Link Sculpting is very interesting technique, People know it with the name of preventing link juice to outsider websites. They change the link's type. As Google ask them to convert their do follow to no follow. And I do not think that Google has changed behavior across this technique.

There's a lot more to this than using nofollow. According to Matt Cutts, if a page has 20 points of link juice to pass on, and it has 5 links pointing at other pages, each page gets 4 points. Logic would state that if you make 1 link nofollow, the 4 remaining pages with follow links would divide the 20 points so that each page gets 5 points.
