Title: What is referrer spam?
Post by: coolmind on November 05, 2011, 06:38:29 AM
Good day,
Referrer spam is when a spammer sends fake referrers to your server. They do this because they know most web stats lists referrers as hyperlinks. They then submit your stats to the search engines in the hopes that they will crawl your stats and find that link. They also hope you click on that link yourself.

Referrer spam is a form of spamdexing. The technique involves making repeated requests from the website with a fake URL reference that marks the site the spammer wishes to advertise. Sites that advertise their access logs, including statistics relating to, then you will end up joining the spammer's site, which in turn be indexed by search engines as they crawl the access logs.

According to Wikipedia
"Referrer spam or log spam or referrer bombing is a kind of spamdexing. The technique involves making repeated web site requests using a fake referrer url that points to the site the spammer wishes to advertise. Sites that publicize their access logs, including referrer statistics, will then end up linking to the spammer's site, which will in turn be indexed by the search engines as they crawl the access logs."

Referrer spam are those pageviews that appear in your analytics that come from places like Russia and others. It's a way to trick blog owners to get visits to their sites.

Hi to All ;)
I agree with both of U in this case of referrer spam but there is a fault in it that is Referrer spamming consumes server resources which are paid for by the website owner or ISP. It slows down access to the site for normal surfers. It uses disk space. It clogs weblogs with bogus information. It subverts the ranking mechanisms used by search engines. Spammers are nothing more than leeches sucking the lifeblood out of the web...

Referrer spam shows just how ingenious black-hatters can be in finding ways to manipulate search engine rankings. When someone clicks on a hyperlink their browser opens up the new web page.

Referrer Spam relies on web masters leaving their server logs open to the public or blog owners showing the top referrers in their site statistics. This means that the referrer URLs may get indexed by search engines and provide a source of inbound-links for the spam site.
