There is an advantage. How large it is depends on a number of factor.

I have moved your question to "Website Crawling and Indexing" since your question did not seem specific to A1 Sitemap Generator. (If a mistake I will move it back)

Yes, sitemap is really a great way to tell search engine how many pages your website have. Sitemap are of two types, 1) for search engine and 2) for users.

So you need to create both type of sitemap if you want to take seo advantage for your site.

Sitemap is helpful for index your pages fast. It is not helpful in increase the PR of your website. If you do any changes like add new pages, remove the pages.. etc then you can tell to Google about it by update your XML sitemap and resubmit it in Google.

A1 Sitemap Generator does come with a scan preset for SMF forums. (Use it before you start website scan.) You could try that. Otherwise maybe ask at the official SMF forum?

If the sitemap of the website is sitemap.xml, then place it in the root folder whereas sitemap.html could be kept anywhere on the website.

Yes you can keep Sitemap anywhere in Website. You must have to submit XML sitemap in the root folder, while you can add HTML sitemap anywhere in the website. HTML sitemap is generally used for users, User can navigate pages from the sitemap and XML sitemap is used for Search Engine, Search Engine can crawl your all website pages from XML sitemap.

site map is like a index for your site and it helps the crawlers to crawl the website, increase google rank in google search.
