Well, here is simplified version:

The A1 Website Search Engine software crawls a website collecting all sorts of informaton:

Having collected this it builds an index file storing calculations scores for pages (e.g. general factors like how much internal link juice flows towards it) and for content-keywords (which pages score high) and anchor-keywords

It also calculates/determines similar/related keywords and caluclates page scores against those - ideally so they can rank for words even if not in anchor or content text. (The efficiency of this correlates to the search index size)

After this stage - it builds the search engine files (different options are available) and the user can upload the generated files.

Generally speaking, even if choosing the Javascript/AJAX only solution A1WSE offer, you can get a very good search since A1WSE stores data in its index very efficiently giving good search results for most websites, both online and on offline media.

It is important to note that depending on the options selected, you can also generate solutions that utilize server-side-code in addition to Javascript/AJAX and select to have much larger index files (which improves search quality)
