Since things change so often I was curious if I had an incorrect outlook on effective backlinking with directories.
So rather than state what I think is correct, is there anyone who has solid info on how many backlinks to post?
Daily, weekly, monthly, spacing between posts, etc.

There is no limitations or any criteria to link the build. But yes, you should focus on the quality backlinks not in quantity.

yes quality is more important that quantity........i have seen more of my competitors are having more links that me but i am little ahead of them even though i have low links because of the quality of the links

i do 3 to 5 links per day....
