what is canonical page and how to fix it?

A lot of pages showing as a canonical page in my Google Webmaster account. Please help and suggest how can I fix this as these pages have stopped appearing in search result.

A canonical URL refers to an HTML link element, with the attribute of rel="canonical" , found in the <head> element of your webpage. It specifies to search engines your preferred URL.
