An umbrella keyword is a keyword that fits many other different long tail keywords under its "umbrella".

For instance: search engine traffic is an umbrella keyword in relation to:

  • Best search engine traffic

  • Search engine traffic for my business

  • Business leads and search engine traffic
While ranking for long tail keywords might be easier, umbrella keywords often have a great deal more search engine volume.

If you would like to rank for an umbrella keyword, then you should make a page optimized for that keyword as a "parent" page in your site map.
